How to sell without feeling salesy in your network marketing business

Do you hate feeling pushy or salesy in your network marketing business?

I bet you’ve been told to invite 3 to 5 new people every day to look at your product or opportunity (usually through Facebook messenger).

…And I bet it makes you cringe.

Feeling obligated to hit a prospecting quota and pursue relationships for the sake of getting a sale can make you feel ingenuine and downright salesy.

After all, didn’t you join your network marketing business was to help and serve others rather than make sales calls all day, every day?

Since the network marketing model only rewards reps when they make a sale, how do you grow your online business without personally messaging and inviting 3 to 5 people every day?

#1. BECOME A VALUE-GIVING MACHINE.

The traditional product pitch marketing is losing its power. People don’t want to feel sold anymore. Instead, they want to consume relevant and useful content that will help them solve their issues, which called content marketing.

Sales pitches often turn people off or annoy people, but with content marketing, people are actually excited to consume your content because it’s valuable and can enrich their life.

When creating valuable content, every piece should…

  1. Teach, Motivate, Inspire or Entertain. If you can help someone learn something new, inspire them to take action or entertain them, they will remember you and come back time and time again. Even if you’re not an expert in your field, you can still teach; just document what worked for you up to this point and share those experiences.
  1. Help your audience get what they want. Most network marketers are so desperate for a sale or a recruit; they’re constantly focusing on helping themselves get the next sale or rank advance. Getting sales and recruits are a byproduct of serving your clients’ needs first. Therefore, share content that helps your audience solve their issues, pains or fears so that they can achieve their deepest desires.

Every time you get ready to share content, before you post or publish it, ask yourself:

  • Will my target audience view this as valuable?
  • Will my audience learn something, or feel motivate, inspired or entertained from this?
  • Will this help my audience get what they want?

If the answer is ever “NO”, scrap it and share something that does add value.

Remember, the more value you provide, the more your audience will see you as a thought-leader, authority figure and influencer.  As Chalene Johnson says, “If you want to be able to affect other people’s thinking, their actions, their behaviors, you need influence.”

#2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLATFORM TO SHARE YOUR VALUE.

Build your business primarily on a platform you can 100% control. You don’t want anyone or anything calling the shots in your network marketing business. Honestly, there is only one platform that will allow that level of control…

…your email subscriber list.

You see, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube, and Google all control which of their users get to see your content.

If you have thousands of active followers who engage in the content you put out regularly and the algorithm or rules of the platform change, you could find yourself with only a fraction of that engagement.

Bye-bye traffic and access to the majority of your following.

However, with an email list, that baby is yours!

No matter what happens on the social media platforms, you still have 24/7 access to all of your clients and prospects.

You don’t have to wait for them to be online at a certain time to see your content either. You can email them and know that they can open and read it when the time is right for them!

Even though your email list is top priority, the various social media platforms are still important. Those platforms become tools to help generate more traffic to your website and email list, and allow you to foster deeper relationships with your audience.

How do you get your followers on social media on your email list?

The best way is to give away something of value for free in exchange for an email address. This is most often called a lead magnet, opt-in, freemium or white paper. This could be a downloadable PDF, video series, checklist, cheat sheet, quick guide, etc. that helps your target audience solve a problem.

Ok, so I’m creating valuable content and I started an email list – now what?

#3. Create a system that sells for you.

Just because you’re adding value and have an email list set up doesn’t guarantee sales. You still need to invite your prospect to buy your product or look at the opportunity. The way to do that without sending out 3-5 personal messages a day is through an automated sales funnel.

The term “sales funnel” sounds so rigid, but it is actually a great way to build trust, give more value and guide your prospect towards making a decision that could help them get what they want.

After your prospect gives you their email in exchange for a freebie (opts-in), you would trickle out an automated 5 to 10 day email series providing them with extra value that solves a part of their pain point, sharing stories, why your product or service would benefit them and finally asking them to work with you.

When done right, this process does not feel salesy and coverts many of your leads and prospects into paying customers… on autopilot.

Here’s the coolest part…

Even if the prospect doesn’t take action or buy, you can continue to build a relationship with them overtime through your email list. Sometimes people need more time to get to know you, consume more of your content and time to build more trust before they buy.

But… because you’re in their inbox weekly adding value, when they are ready to buy, you’ll be their go-to resource. (Hello $$!)

You see, this system does the inviting for you behind the scenes. You don’t have to do the daily prospecting 1:1 grind, sending messages to your old orthodontist or to your grandma. Instead, you can focus your time on creating more value and serving your clients.

Forget the prospecting quotas and salesy private Facebook messages. Focus on adding new subscribers to your email list, which will do the inviting for you.

NOTE: This method is a “long-game” strategy, meaning it takes time to build and won’t happen over night. If you’re in need of sales (like yesterday), get to dialin’, my friend. But come back to this method because it will have a snowball effect on your business which will flourish overtime with patience and consistency.
